Devil May Cry - Dante
The video game series centers around the main character Dante. Though he remains the lead character, there are other special characters in each version. Dante has also appeared as a guest character in several crossover games. Dante’s mission is to avenge the murder of his mother and to exterminate the demons who corrupted his brother.
Dante is one of the twin sons of a demon with great power – Sparda. Sparda was a demon knight who fought for humanity. Subsequently, Dante has inherited supernormal powers. He is almost invincible with extra ordinary stamina, agility, reflexes, coordination and strength because of his half demon heritage.
Dante is initially depicted as a mercenary who has special paranormal powers. The game designer Hideki Kamiya wished to style the character as a "cool and stylish" man. Dante is styled as a witty, silver short haired person, with icy blue eyes and special red clothing. The character wears red because in Japan it is the traditional color for a heroic figure. He has a dark sense of humour and a cocky, laid back attitude. He carries two heavily customized pistols – Ebony and Ivory, and a Rebellion or a twin handled sword. He also possesses special ‘Devil Arms’ created by his father. However, after some criticism of the initial styling, Dante’s personality was slightly altered in the later versions. In the reboot, his styling was developed by Ninja Theory.
His half demon origin also enables him to transform into the "Devil Trigger" mode. He then possesses even greater speed and strength and is more deft with his melee weapons. He recuperates faster and his health gets restored at a steady pace.
Though he is half demon, he is proud of being human. He uses the phrase 'Devils never cry' to taunt his demonic enemies in every game. In Devil May Cry 2, Dante flips a coin to make his decisions, however at the end of the game it is revealed that both sides of the coin are heads. So, he was using a coin to demonstrate that he is indifferent to the options.
In DmC, Devil May Cry reboot, there is a major shift from the original series and Dante belongs to a parallel universe with a totally different appearance. He is half angelic and half demonic ‘nephilim’. His sense of humour, sarcasm and wit are retained but his attitude is more spunky. Dante is featured as a young adult in his early twenties. Dante's confident and fearless attitude has gained him widespread popularity.
